Artist Allan Williams was on the sofa chatting to Radio Suffolk’s Lesley Dolphin on her show this week.
He was promoting the start of Suffolk Open Studios, which invites the public to take a peek inside artists’ workshops throughout the month of June. Spirus are delighted to be helping Suffolk Open Studios with their publicity, so it was great to hear Alan discussing the month long arts festival on the radio.
His workshop is in an atmospheric old mill near to Earl Soham, where visitors can watch him creating his paintings of the Suffolk Coast, local landscapes and flowers. There is no pressure to buy any of the art – this is just an opportunity to look behind the scenes whilst a work of art is in progress.
For those who have never been before, around 130 local Suffolk artists will be opening their doors to welcome visitors in for free tours around their studios. If you have ever wondered what the life of an artist is like, here is the chance to find out.
Prior to the main event, from 16-28th May 2016, Suffolk Open Studios will be operating its “Art about Town” scheme, when its artists exhibit in local businesses, cafés and restaurants. This gives visitors a taste of what is to be seen during the main Open Studio Event, which will run on the weekends of 4/5th, 11/12th, 18/19th and 25/26th June. Not all artists will exhibit on every weekend so it is important for visitors to check opening dates and times on the website or in the directory.
There are also Hubs and Trails which are an easy way to visit a variety of artists in one day by following a set route on a trail or going to a Hub where you can see four or five artists at once.
There will be a huge range of art on display across the county, including oils, watercolours, acrylics, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glassware, sculpture, 2D and 3D mixed media, printmaking, mosaics and much more. For more information about where and when to take part, visit www.suffolkopenstudios.org/directory.
