Marketing agency vs. branding agency:

Marketing agency vs. branding agency. This is a topic that comes up quite a lot, and we believe that when one is able to better understand the difference between marketing and branding, they have the upper hand when it comes to making an informed decision on who is right for them. When determining whether your business needs a marketing or branding agency, it is vital to establish your goals, and fully understand what you as a company are looking to accomplish.

In this post, we'll briefly discuss what each agency actually is. We'll then examine the two main differences between marketing agencies and branding agencies. We'll also look at how the two often work hand-in-hand, the different roles and services that each agency offers, and how we do things over at Spirus.

What is a marketing agency?

As we've mentioned before, a marketing agency is a company, or service provider, that works with various clients in one or more areas of marketing. Their job is to assist companies with planning, creating, and executing specific phases of their marketing strategies and goals.

What is a branding agency?

A branding agency is a company that specialises in creating and launching brands, as well as rebranding. Their job is to create, plan, measure, and manage specific branding strategies for clients, including support in advertising and some other forms of promotion.

What are the two main differences between a marketing agency and a branding agency?

Marketing agency vs. branding agency. Marketing refers to the tools and processes that are implemented to best raise awareness, and communicate about, a company’s brand, activities, and offerings.

Branding is basically who you are as a company. It’s the personality and identity that your target audience and consumers will associate you with. A strong brand is built on a company’s principles, values, mission statement, brand personality, and vision.

  • Branding before marketing

Your brand identity will dictate all of your marketing plans. Without a meaningful logo and message, you won't be able to advertise your company. And without the correct brand identity, you will struggle to have a unified voice. People will be looking for a way to trust and believe your company and the services or products that you offer, and building that up is the most important step when starting out.

  • Marketing increases sales and branding increases customer loyalty

Marketing plans and strategies are generally expected to deliver the goods on short-term targets and goals. Take, for example, the World Cup. World Cup-related ads would be a great way to target an audience and increase sales around that time. When it comes to your brand, however, and what your company ultimately stands for, that doesn't change. Marketing campaigns will increase sales to customers, but your brand is what will keep them coming back.

Are there any similarities between marketing agencies and branding agencies?

Despite their obvious differences, marketing and branding do share a few similarities. They both help to push information out to your customers, give them a reason to buy your products or services, and help create and nurture a long-lasting business relationship. Whilst not the same, they do work hand-in-hand with each other to ultimately help you reach your desired targets and goals. Without a strong brand identity and voice, for example, you will struggle to pull off a successful marketing campaign.

What are the roles and services of a marketing agency?

A marketing agency will discuss with you what your company's goals, targets, and specific values are. They will then create an advertising campaign/strategy that will best connect with your target audience. It's important to note that, if the branding side of things is not up to scratch, this can be an extremely difficult task for a marketing agency.

Below are a few of the services that a good marketing agency will be able to provide you with.

PR (Public relations):

Public relations refers to the strategic communication used to, again, create, nurture, and sustain a favourable image of a particular company or their goods and services. PR also play an important role in helping to identify and build strong relationships with influential individuals and groups that are responsible for shaping market perceptions in the industry.

Social media management and engagement:

A good marketing agency will connect with potential customers and consumers through online forums, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Tumblr, and any other form of social media that you can think of.

Direct mail marketing and newsletters:

Direct mail marketing is a strategy that seeks to engage prospective customers offline by sending them things like printed mailers, postcards, perishable items, corporate swag, or other physical items. Direct mail marketing works because, unlike other forms of marketing, it takes advantage of the positive psychology of receiving an actual gift.

Search marketing:

Search marketing is a tactic that is used to gain a successful online presence on search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo. Divided into two main categories, search marketing involves either search engine optimisation (SEO), which is the process of gaining good search engine rankings via organic and unpaid tactics, or pay-per-click (PPC), whereby listings are placed on search engines via paid advertisements.

Content writing and marketing:

Content writing is the act of creating content for online marketing purposes. Writers will write copy for websites, blogs, social media, ebooks, videos, and a variety of other platforms. They will work with the business or customer to better understand what tone of voice they're looking for, and consistent, high-quality content writing has proved to be an invaluable way to connect brands with their consumers.

Website design and user experience (UX):

Your website is the primary point of contact for customers. It allows you to showcase your business’ professionalism, expertise, and the good market reputation that you have built up. Because of this, website design is crucial for any digital marketing plan and cannot be overlooked. It is more often than not the first impression of your company.

Traditional advertising:

Traditional advertising speaks to forms of mass media that include things like magazines, television, digital media, radio, and billboards. It is an interruptive form of marketing that allows businesses to showcase their products and or services in front of very large audiences, regardless of whether the said audience is interested in them or not.

What are the roles and services of a branding agency?

A brand agency deals with identifying your core business values and helping give them a face. The brand of your company, if created successfully, will connect with people on an emotional level. It's how consumers will identify your company from the tons of others out there.

Below are a few of the services that a good branding agency will be able to provide you with.

Logo design:

First impressions are everything, and for a large portion of your prospective customers, your logo will be the very first time they discover your brand. An excellent logo will inform clients of what your business is about, and set the stage for large-scale identity going forward. Essentially the "face" of the company, a strong and distinctive logo is vital.

Brand awareness:

People tend to recall a brand by its logo, and a logo has the magical ability to cross cultural boundaries and international borders. Take Apple for example. Whilst a rather extreme example, as one of the most recognisable brands in the world, they don't even need text. They have imprinted their logo into people's minds, essentially because of how well they have branded their products.

Brand identity:

Logos have the ability to tell prospective customers a lot about your business without having to say much at all. A good branding agency will design a logo for you that is more than just eye-catching. It will establish your business's identity and core values. It will also have meaning, perhaps tell a story, and most importantly, establish a permanent brand identity.

Brand messaging:

What makes you different? How are you better than your competitors? What can you offer that others can't? Your brand message needs to account for these types of questions and more. It defines what your company is. Everything your business does and says should be meaningful and reflect positively on your brand image.

Brand voice:

Brands can be described as similar to people in that, each has a different voice and way of expressing themselves. Establishing your brand voice and sticking to it across all platforms is extremely important, as a strong voice will cement your business's identity.

Style guide:

Style guides will effectively present your brand voice, brand messaging, and other brand aspects in more precise detail for every employee and stakeholder. They will lay out the exact language to use in various scenarios, what colour schemes to use for design layouts, and how to best communicate with your target audience.
